While cameras are often already loaded with features, software-based hacks can add new shooting capabilities not mentioned in the instruction manual. This image from space was taken by a Canon PowerShot camera hacked with CHDK. And hacking the camera might actually be the easy part, thanks to an open-source firmware update. While it sounds like a complicated science project, it’s actually something many have successfully accomplished (Ho and Muhammad just made theirs unique by sending the little Lego guy with it and, oh, they’re teens). To document the event from liftoff to crash-land, they rigged a basic Canon point-and-shoot camera to continuously snap photos. Last year, two Canadian teenagers, Mathew Ho and Asad Muhammad, successfully sent a Lego mini figure up into space using a weather balloon as the vehicle.

Confirm that the firmware update process to the new version has been updated.

After the firmware update process is complete, turn off the camera and remove the memory card.

Select the Firmware version in the settings menu and follow the instructions on the screen to complete the firmware update.

Add a memory card into the slot on the camera and then turn on the cam.

use the card slot or card reader to copy “ D3300_0102.bin” to a memory card that has been formatted in the camera.

Run F-D3300-V102W.exe to extract the following file to a folder called “ D3300Update“:.

Download F-D3300-V102W.exe and enter it into the folder created in the first step.

Create a folder on the computer’s hard disk and name it as desired.

Press the camera MENU button and select the Firmware version in the settings menu to display the camera firmware version.

(How quickly the lens can correct focus produces a significant difference.) Prefocused camera lag was slower but still realistic in Live View manner, at roughly 0.47 second. The Nikon D3300 simply offers contrast-detect AF at Live View, which required approximately 1.8 seconds to concentrate in our evaluations, which is a little slow for Live View. When prefocused, camera lag fell to 0.081 second that is about average for a used DSLR. Manual focus shutter lag was strangely somewhat slower than complete autofocus (center) at roughly 0.27 moment, and that is somewhat lethargic to get a DSLR. Shutter lag grew to approximately 0.34 moment in Auto-area AF style. Letting the flash increased shutter lag just marginally to 0.29 minute, representing the additional delay brought on by the metering pre-flash. The D3300 took about 0.26 moment for complete AF working with the center focus point.

Even the Nikon D3300’s complete autofocus shutter lag when shooting the identical target multiple times was a bit slower than typical for a user DSLR, but not awful for entry-level version.
